Do dogs also suffer from dementia?

Hebben honden ook last van dementie?
Just like humans, animals can also develop several ailments as they get older. Often, this is a slow process that is not immediately noticed. To what extent can dogs suffer from dementia? And how can you recognise it?

Dogs are getting older, just like humans

This is because we have increasing knowledge and technology about the needs of dogs and their health. However, unfortunately, dogs can still suffer from dementia or Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome (CDS). If your dog suffers from CDS, it does not mean that this is the end. Only a few adjustments are needed in your and your dog's life.

Dementia in dogs can be recognised by fairly similar symptoms as in humans. For example, they may start behaving strangely towards people and other dogs. It is important to consult a vet if you suspect your dog is developing dementia. This could also indicate other underlying problems.

Symptoms of dogs with dementia
  • Their social behaviour changes, and they start acting differently towards their owner and other animals. Their interest can significantly decrease or increase. When you come home, you might be greeted with much less enthusiasm than usual.
  • They seem disoriented and it looks like they no longer know where they live. They might just walk past their own house or usual dog walking spot.
  • They seem to have memory loss and learn less quickly. The commands they usually perform as quickly as possible are suddenly forgotten, and teaching them something new seems an impossible task.
  • Their day and night rhythm is reversed. Dogs can suddenly start walking around the house at night and cry for their owner.
  • They can forget their potty training. It may be that they deliberately defecate or urinate indoors shortly after being let out.
  • Due to dementia, a dog can experience more fear, aggression, or restlessness. This can lead to more barking, even at inappropriate times.

Unfortunately, there is no medicine that can cure canine dementia. However, you can make it as easy as possible for your dog. For example, with supplements, diet, or changing your daily life, you can make it a lot more pleasant for your dog.

Slowing down dementia in dogs

Still some good news, because you can do a few things to prevent or slow down dementia. Research has shown that mental and physical stimulation can help keep your dog's brain healthy for a long time.

What is very important for this are games, training, and daily walks. A healthy weight and a balanced diet also help overall health and thus brain health.
